A McKinsey consultant just called my $5M ARR business “cute.”

His biggest win? A deck about “operational excellence.”

I’m being lectured on Zoom by a professional failure 😞

The startup advice industrial complex is broken...

People with:

  • Impressive credentials
  • Zero operational experience
  • Business “theory”

Are drowning out voices that actually matter.

They speak in frameworks and buzzwords.

Decks full of “total addressable market” projections. Advice like “optimize your funnel metrics” when you have 12 customers.

Meanwhile, real founders are solving actual problems:

  • How to make payroll next month.
  • Kill the feature bleeding server costs.
  • Fire their developer or find $30K somehow.

The credential crowd doesn’t know these problems exist.

They’ve never laid awake wondering if their runway ends before their next milestone.

Never had to choose between marketing spend and keeping the lights on.

But they’ll confidently tell you your $2M ARR business is “too small to matter.”

That bootstrapping shows “lack of ambition.”

That you “don’t understand venture economics.”

Here’s what they don’t understand:

  • Most successful businesses aren’t unicorns.
  • Most valuable companies weren’t built with VC money.
  • Most entrepreneurs don’t want to give up control for growth capital they don’t need.

Many of the loudest voices in startup media have never built anything profitable.

They’ve optimized presentations. Raised funding rounds. Managed other people’s money.

But they’ve never had their personal credit score determine whether their business survives another month.

Be careful who you listen to.

Some people study startups. Others live them.

Until next time,
